Untangling HIV Treatment as Prevention

Since the publication of the results of the HPTN 052 trial,1 “treatment as prevention” has become the new buzzword in the HIV/AIDS field. Advocates are hailing it as the beginning of the end of AIDS, researchers are talking about it at conferences, and countries are adding it to their national strategies. But there seems to be confusion as to what constitutes “treatment as prevention” and how it should be implemented programmatically. Read more

Futures Group Awarded USAID’s Implementation Science Investment Study

In August 2011, USAID released the Annual Program Statement (APS) “Implementation Science Research to Support Programs under PEPFAR”, and awarded a total of $21,029,441 for eight studies in seven countries. Each of the awarded studies will be for a maximum 3-year period of study implementation and with a total study budget of US$3 million or less. The scope of the APS encourages study proposals to address HIV technical-area-specific program areas, as well as how to strengthen the integration of programs across the prevention, care, and treatment continuum. Swazi King Endorses Male Circumcision for HIV Prevention
Ayanda Ngeketo, Elizabeth Mallas and the US Government team with King Mswati, the Queen Mother and the Ministry of Health team.
On July 15, Swaziland’s King Mswati III encouraged his male subjects to get circumcised and endorsed a campaign aimed at tackling HIV in a country with the world's highest HIV infection rate. Read more

In concert with our colleagues and friends around the world, Futures Group recognizes World AIDS Day on December 1, 2009. UNAIDS estimates there are now 33.4 million people living with HIV around the world. In 2008, 2.8 million people became infected with the virus, and 2 million people died from AIDS. Futures Group aims to increase access for all to prevention, treatment, care, and support because we believe this access is a fundamental human right. Equity in Health: November 13, 2009

Overall improvements in healthcare systems and delivery often fail to benefit those in greatest need. In many countries the poor represent the largest population group but have worse health outcomes, use health services less, and benefit less from government health expenditures than the economically better-off. They may be dispersed widely over rural areas or concentrated in urban slums, impeding access to all types of services. They have less ability to advocate for themselves and to engage others on their behalf. Read more

On August 4th 2009, at a well publicized and attended ceremony held at the Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan, Khalid Irshad Pharmaceuticals (KIP), a local strategic supplier to the USAID-funded COMPRI-A Social Marketing Project implemented by Futures Group International, was officially awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2008 certification for its quality product production and overall pharmaceutical operations. At the request of the State of Chiapas’ AIDS program, the USAID Health Policy Initiative conducted a three day training of all HIV specialized health care workers in the state on topics such as non discrimination, gender based violence and its effects on quality services and health care. Read more
